After saving his own life by deserting his shipmates who were facing almost certain death, poor old Arnie gets deserted on a desolate planet all by himself, and because of the effects of a worm-hole, he cannot be rescued for 600 years!
The escape pod he took had supplies which would keep him alive and terra-forming equipment (Eco-accelerator Rockets) to make the planet habitable. Also included were manuals on creating clones with his own DNA. He tried to create a female, but failed and created a male.... so he tried again...
600 years later, when he finally gets rescued, his rescuers find the planet populated by male and females, all of whom look like Rimmer..... After discovering that they couldn't damage his hard-light drive, the clones threw him into a cell... where he remained for 557 years!
